TORONTO, September 16, 2019 – Woodbine’s legendary track photographer Michael Burns captured many of the memorable moments from the 23rd running of the $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile (Grade 1), which was the highlight of a stakes-packed weekend of racing at Woodbine Racetrack. Before reliving all the action, meet the the man behind the lens. Saturday’s million-dollar main event featured a field of 11 turf specialists. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at some of the Ricoh Woodbine Mile starters. NBA Champion Norman Powell of the Toronto Raptors was guest drawmaster at the Ricoh Woodbine Mile post position draw on Wednesday and even took on jockeys Eurico Rosa Da Silva and Rafael Hernandez in a Turf Cup battle. It was a proud moment for Canadian horse racing when Sam-Son Farm’s homebred El Tormenta pulled off the record 44-1 upset win in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile, defeating the favoured filly Got Stormy on Saturday with jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva aboard for trainer Gail Cox. Among the other Saturday stakes highlights, Godolphin homebred Old Persian conquered the E.P. Taylor Turf Course in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Stakes in rein to James Doyle for trainer Charlie Appleby. Starship Jubilee defended her title in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes Presented by the Japan Racing Association under Luis Contreras and Yorkton was a repeat winner in the Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes with Patrick Husbands aboard. Woodbine honoured the recently retired multiple stakes winner Melmich in a special ceremony prior to Saturday’s fifth race. The Kevin Attard trainee made his final on-track appearance by leading the post parade for that race before returning to LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society’s farm. A 50/50 raffled draw was held in support of LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society with the winning ticket holder taking home $3,247. Share This:Share
